George Santayana was born on this date in 1863.

Although most famous for his saying, “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it,” he also said, “History is a pack of lies about events that never happened told by people who weren’t there.”

Santayana's famous aphorism is translated into Polish and inscribed on a plaque at the Auschwitz concentration camp.

How would you resolve the contradiction in those sentiments?
