Jane Austen, born on this date in 1775, wrote in Emma (published the day before her 40th birthday), “Vanity working on a weak head, produces every sort of mischief.”

Writing prompt: Write a scene in which your protagonist confuses belief with reality because of a mistaken confidence in her or his abilities.
