Jane Austen‘s Emma was published on this date in 1815.

In it, the protagonist states her belief that “if a woman doubts as to whether she should accept a man or not, she certainly ought to refuse him. If she can hesitate as to ‘Yes,’ she ought to say ‘No’ directly.”

Writing prompt: Write a scene in which a character defines her doubts to a suitor instead of saying “No” directly.
