Novelist and essayist Elizabeth Benedict, born in 1954 and author of The Joy of Writing Sex: A Guide for Fiction Writers, has been described as specializing “in the subterranean currents of modern relationships, the secret motivations and betrayals that underlie everyday interactions.”

Writing prompt: Write a scene in which an observer deciphers the subterranean current between your protagonist and his/her partner.
